Er war Ende Mai 1952 rund 70 Kilometer entlang der Zonengrenze gefahren, von Helmstedt-Vorsfelde im Norden bis Söllingen im Süden. Mit eigenen Augen wollte er sehen, wie die DDR ihre Ankündigung umsetzte, die innerdeutsche Grenze (damals noch meist Interzonengrenze genannt) zu sperren.
